Some people seem to romanticize the idea of bluffing in poker. They seem to believe that a really good poker player can play their cards right, but a legendary poker player can win regardless of what kind of cards they get.

Now, having said that, let me just put one thing out there – that kind of mentality has cost me A LOT of money while playing Texas Hold’em, which leads me to one conclusion – you have to have at least some good hands to actually win at Texas Hold’em. But, this also leads us to an advantage that you have as a poker player, and that is the fact that, mathematically, you WILL have a certain percentage of the winning hands. You see, it is as unlikely in a game of poker that you will have the losing hand every time as it is that you will have the winning hand every time. Every player at the table has a mathematically equal chance to win, and so you, as a player, need to realize that bluffing your way out of the bad hands is not necessarily as important as playing the good hands right! Why try to fake your way out of the bad ones when you could play it safe, wait, bide your time, and then when the right hands come along, play them right?

This sort of mentality might not take you to the world series of poker, but it is a mentality that will help you to avoid excessive losses while playing. You would be amazed at how much less money you lose when you stop trusting yourself to bluff, and you instead focus on the odds and playing THEM instead, not the man sitting across from you!
